François Rochon

François Rochon is the founder and portfolio manager of Giverny Capital, the Montréal investment firm he launched in 1998 after five years managing a family portfolio built on the writings of warren-buffett, benjamin-graham, John Templeton, Philip Fisher and Peter Lynch. The corpus holds two Giverny archives — 25 annual letters (2001–2025, raw/investor-letters/GivernyCapital/) and 26 quarterly investor letters from Giverny Capital Asset Management (2020–2026, raw/investor-letters/GivernyCapitalAmericas/). Rochon's distinctive frame is wealth generation: he values a business as a durable machine for creating wealth, and treats a share as fractional ownership of that machine.

The keystone: own productive assets

Rochon states the philosophy plainly in the 2015 annual letter, under a section titled "The Keystone of our Philosophy": "We believe that exceptional returns can only be obtained by owning assets that intrinsically generate exceptional returns... the best assets to own are productive assets—ones that are a source of continuous wealth creation. We've learned throughout the years that a company with a durable competitive advantage is an asset that falls in this category." That collapses moats and returns into one criterion — the durable competitive advantage is the wealth machine, and owning it is the whole job.

Stocks as fractional ownership, priced by intrinsic value

The operational consequence is patience, stated in the 2025 annual letter: "Over the short term, the stock market is irrational and unpredictable (though some may think otherwise). Over the long term, however, the market adequately reflects the intrinsic value of companies. If the stock selection process is sound and rational, investment returns will eventually follow." That is the mr-market wager restated in one breath — buy the intrinsic-value of a sound business and let the market catch up — and it explains why Rochon reports being "nearly 100% invested at all times" rather than trying to time the market (2023 letter).

Wealth generation as the yardstick

Rochon's benchmark is wealth created, not price moved. In 2025 he recorded the Rochon US Portfolio at 6,839% since 1993 (13.9% annualized) against 2,713% for the S&P 500 (10.8% annualized), and framed the discipline as treating partners "the way we would want to be treated if our roles were reversed." The same theme runs through the 2010 letter, which contrasts businesses that create wealth with assets that merely store it: lending to governments "does not create wealth... Businesses create products that meet the needs of consumers... To own an economic participation in these businesses is an authentic source of wealth creation."

What the corpus does not contain

The letters are the sole primary source here; there is no SEC-grounded or independent audit data cached for Giverny in this wiki, so all performance figures are Rochon's own reported numbers, quoted from the letters rather than verified against the SEC cache.
