Tweedy, Browne

Tweedy, Browne Company LLC is a value-investing firm self-described as "Established in 1920 Investment Advisers" — among the oldest continuously operating value shops, and the corpus's institutional link between benjamin-graham and modern factor investing. Its lineage is explicit: the Graham screens "have been incorporated in Tweedy, Browne's investment screening and decision making process since at least 1958, when Tom Knapp, a retired partner, joined Tweedy, Browne from Benjamin Graham's investment management firm, Graham-Newman Corporation."

The firm's edge: the Graham factors, documented

The firm's What Has Worked in Investing (1992; revised 2009) compiles "over 50 studies" and concludes that "geography had no influence on the basic conclusion that stocks possessing the characteristics described in this booklet provided the best returns over long periods of time." The recurring characteristics are low price to assets (including net-net), low price to earnings and cash flow, significant insider buying, a prior price decline, and small capitalization.

The firm's current criteria are broader than the net-net extreme: it invests in businesses trading at roughly two-thirds or less of estimated intrinsic value.

The booklet also curates the academic confirmation — most pointedly Lakonishok, Shleifer and Vishny's finding that "value strategies yield higher returns because these strategies exploit the mistakes of the typical investor and not because these strategies are fundamentally riskier." That claim — value outperformance is behavioral, not a risk premium — is the bridge from Graham's mr-market to factor-investing.

Corpus coverage

Beyond the booklet, the corpus holds over 30 Tweedy, Browne Commentary and Annual letters (2018–2026), the firm's continuing periodic client letters. The booklet remains the canonical source; the query page what-has-worked-in-investing synthesizes its empirical claims against Greenblatt and Morningstar.

Tweedy, Browne is the statistical-cheap pole of quality-vs-statistical-cheap — Graham's factors, not quality growth — the practitioner lineage behind security-analysis and cigar-butt-investing, and a primary source for value-traps and factor-investing.

Investment philosophy

The compiled, source-grounded version of this investor's beliefs lives at investment philosophy.
