Seth Klarman / Baupost
Seth Klarman (born 1957) founded The Baupost Group in 1982 and has run it for over four decades, building one of the largest and most successful value-oriented hedge funds. His 1991 book Margin of Safety is one of the defining texts of value investing; it went out of print and commands thousands of dollars on the secondary market, and the corpus holds an OCR'd copy.
Value investing defined
Klarman's definition is the cleanest statement of the discipline in the corpus:
"There is nothing esoteric about value investing. It is simply the process of determining the value underlying a security and then buying it at a considerable discount from that value."
The margin-of-safety is the mechanism that makes that work in the face of uncertainty:
"value investors seek a margin of safety, allowing room for imprecision, bad luck, or analytical error in order to avoid sizable losses over time."
And his foundational premise rejects the efficient-market-hypothesis outright:
"value investing is predicated on the belief that the financial markets are not efficient."
Loss avoidance and absolute returns
Klarman is the corpus's strongest voice for permanent-loss-of-capital avoidance as the primary goal, and for bottom-up, absolute-return investing over relative performance. His letters restate the same priority: "the point of investing is to make money with limited risk". Baupost is known for holding large cash balances in the absence of opportunities and for its heavy use of special-situations — distressed debt, spinoffs, and other catalysts.
Corpus coverage
The Klarman record here is thinner than his reputation would suggest, for archival reasons:
raw/investor-letters/BaupostKlarman/Letters-Markdown/ holds only 12 letters (1995–2001), split
from a leaked compilation of semi-annual letters and cross-verified on three mirrors; the
2002–2025 letters are not publicly retrievable (takedowns/paywalls), documented in the archive
manifest. The Margin of Safety copy at

scan and contains machine-recognition artifacts (e.g. stray characters, ligature and spelling
errors); quotes above are from clean passages, but any quote should be spot-checked against the
source before reuse.
