Mohnish Pabrai
Mohnish Pabrai (born 1964, Mumbai, India) is the founder and managing partner of Pabrai Investment Funds, launched in 1999 (PIFI's first NAV is dated July 1, 1999). Before investing he built and sold an information-technology services firm; he frames investing and entrepreneurship as "closely related," both being "low-risk arbitrage oriented vocations".
Philosophy: cloning and "Focused Value"
Pabrai's stated method is to copy the proven playbooks of warren-buffett and charlie-munger rather than invent new ones — openly enough that the French press profiled him in 2013 as the eternal cloner (l'éternel cloneur), a piece he linked in his own letter. His own name for the style is "Focused Value": a handful of positions bought at large discounts to intrinsic-value. Concentration is the point — he channels Munger directly:
"Charlie feels that 3 or 4 well-selected businesses are all that is required to have a diversified portfolio."
The frame is the quality-vs-statistical-cheap side of value — great businesses acquired cheaply, with minimal downside and an asymmetric, low-downside payoff. As he put it about one holding:
"So, while we bought a dollar bill for well under 10 cents, I am most excited about the increase in value of that dollar bill."
Dhandho and the float engine
Pabrai extends the berkshire-hathaway playbook into insurance-float. His Dhandho Holdings vehicle (formed 2014) was built around acquiring an insurer to harvest float:
"I have had an interest for well over a decade in owning/controlling a high quality" float engine.
Record
The flagship track record is long and lumpy: a $100,000 investment in PIFI at inception (July 1, 1999), rolled into PIF2, was worth $1,319,900 as of December 31, 2022 — an annualized return of 11.6% since inception net of all fees and expenses, versus $435,750 for the S&P 500 over the same span.
Corpus coverage
raw/investor-letters/PabraiFunds/Letters-Markdown/ holds ~141 files: 134 Pabrai Funds letters
1999–2026 plus 7 Dhandho Holdings annual reports (2017–2024). This is a dense, continuous record.
The 2015/2016/2022 Dhandho pages were broken on the firm's site and are absent (noted in the
archive manifest). Performance figures above are cited from the letters, not the SEC cache.
