Valuation Across Asset Classes
Valuation is not one discipline applied uniformly; the method bends to the nature of the asset being valued. This page collects Damodaran's account of how the cash-flow/price distinction plays out when the asset is not a common stock — and when the market is not the US.
At the limit are assets with no cash flows at all, where the value/price question becomes acute. Gold and bitcoin are his standing examples: for such assets there is a fair price but no cash-flow-derived value to anchor it. Without fundamentals to discount, what remains is a pricing exercise driven by demand — and "In the muddled middle, what you get is neither price nor value, but mush". This is the same boundary intrinsic-value draws: no cash flows, no intrinsic value, only a price.
Even among cash-flowing assets, the unit of valuation changes. Asset-based valuation "value the individual assets of the company by discounting the cash flows on each asset at a discount rate that reflects the risk of that asset", and sum-of-the-parts valuation values "the individual parts (businesses) of a multi business company separately and add them up." Whether the parts are worth more or less than the whole is itself an empirical question about conglomerate structure, relevant to capital-allocation.
The geographic dimension is where the method changes most. The equity-risk-premium is not a global constant: the premium in any market is "Base Premium for Mature Equity Market + Country Premium", so the same business model valued in two countries carries two different discount rates. Country risk — default spread scaled by relative equity-bond volatility — is the bridge from a US-centric model to a genuinely cross-border one.
The unifying rule Damodaran returns to across all of these is that the tool must match the job. Price an asset that has cash flows and you have mis-specified the problem; value an asset that has none and you have invented an anchor that does not exist. The correct frame is chosen per asset, per market, per claim — which is why both dcf-valuation and relative-valuation-multiples are needed, and why neither alone is sufficient.
